Scenes from a BioCube 8 (Part 2)

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Pictured here is an immature clone (still lacking full pigmentation and zooxanthellae) of a red-and-white variegated Discosoma sp. in our BioCube 8 gallon nano aquarium. This clone is the result of pedal laceration from the “mother” polyp (lower right). We have found this unusual morph of Indo-Pacific Discosoma to provide a striking visual contrast in a “soft coral” dominated aquarium. Like most other Indo-Pacific Discosoma species, it is very hardy and a fast colonizer. Some polyps of this morph display more white radial striping, while others have variable amounts of green speckles on the oral disc. Interestingly, the morphology of the resulting clones seems to be irrespective of the “mother’s” morphology.
